Swap Serials

Explanation

This activity is used to swap serials within a serial structure or between two different serial structures. 

If access control is established, you can only swap the serials to which you have access. Establishing access control is done by assigning a user to an access group which has been defined in basic data. The access groups are used to extend access to all or selected parts and serials in a structure. When the serials are swapped, the access groups belonging to the selected serials will be changed. Therefore, swapped serials will receive access from its new topmost serial's access.

This activity is actually a combination of two removals and two installations. However, it will be carried out as one integrated activity. All the rules regarding the operational status and configuration that apply to an installation of a serial pertain to this activity. The following example illustrates the meaning of swapping two serials within a serial structure. Note: It is possible to swap serials between two different serial structures as well. 

Assume that we have two engines, Engine 01 and Engine 02, that is installed in the same aircraft (they can also be installed in two different aircrafts). Each engine structure has a pump installed in it and an access group assigned to it. See the table below: 

The process of swapping the pumps between the serials is as follows:

• Pump 03 is removed from Engine 01

• Pump 04 is removed from Engine 02

• Pump 03 is installed in Engine 02

• Pump 04 is installed in Engine 01

When Pump 03 is swapped and installed in Engine 02, the access groups for the pump will be changed. After the serials are swapped, Pump 03 will receive Access Group B, and Pump 04 will receive Access Group A.

Prerequisites

• Installed serials must exist in both parent structures, and the serials must have the same part number and revision, or any possible combination of alternates.

System Effects

• The installed serials are both moved from the current structure, and into another.
• If the serial installed is defined as an alternate with interchangeability rule Qualified Interchangeable, the alternate must be approved before the operational condition for the structure can be set to Operational. For more information, see the online help file, Approve or Reject Structure Changes.
• If the installed serial is part of the minimum configuration and has the Non Operational operational condition, the parent serial of the structure in which it is installed will also receive the Non Operational operational condition.
• If a Mandatory type dependency rule is violated when swapping the serials, the operational condition of the parent serial will be set to Non Operational.
• If the structure change is performed from a work order, a mismatch record will be created if the removed serial is not installed in the parent serial.
• If the structure change is performed from a work order, a mismatch record will be created if the installed serial is installed in another serial.
• When the serial is installed in a structure, the serial will receive access rights from the parent serial of the selected structure.

Procedure

Use this procedure to swap serials within a serial structure:

Note: You can also swap serials between two different structures. In this case the values in the Vehicle ID, Top Part No, and Top Serial No fields in the Remove or Swap from area and Install or Swap into area will differ.

1. Open the Serial Structure Information window and query (F3) for the necessary structure.
2. In the graphical object structure, select the part that is to be swapped or removed, right-click, point to Structure Changes, and then click Swap Components. The Swap Components assistant opens.

Note: This assistant can also be opened from the Consist Of tab, by right-clicking on a serial record, pointing to Structure Changes, and then clicking Swap Components. When you are working in this tab, and need to move down the structure, select the required serial record, right-click and then click Next Level until the structure level on which the part that is to be swapped or removed is displayed.

3. The values in the Remove or Swap from area appear automatically. These values show the part/serial information of the serial structure for which the serial will be swapped.
4. In the Install or Swap into area, enter the part/serial information of the serial structure the serial will be swapped into. In the Vehicle ID field enter the ID of the vehicle part you want to swap a serial with. Click List to select a value. The value in this field must be the same as the value in the Vehicle ID field in the Remove or Swap from area, since you are swapping components within one structure.  When a value in this field is entered, the values in the Top Part No and Top Serial No appear automatically. Alternatively, you can select a value in the Top Part No field or the Top Serial No field directly. 
5. In the Structure Pos field, enter the structure change position in which the swapped serial is to be installed. Click List to select a currently installed structure position.
6. The values in the Part No/Rev and the Serial Number fields appear automatically.
7. In the Workshop field, enter the workshop responsible for the swapping of the selected serials. Click List to select a valid value.
8. If you want to connect swapping of the selected serials to a maintenance event, click List to select a valid value for the Mx Event Number field.
9. In the Str. Change Date field, enter the date and time the structure change is to be performed.
10. Select the Unscheduled Removal? check box if this structure change is to be an unscheduled removal.
11. Select the Run in Batch? check box if you want access rights for the swapped serials to be updated through a batch job.
12. Click Finish to close the assistant and perform the structure change.

Use this procedure to perform a structure change, i.e., swap serials, for the structure of the serial on the work task:

1. Open the Report In Work Order window and query (F3) for the desired work order.
2. Click the Work Tasks tab, select the desired task, and then click the Task Card tab. Alternatively, the Work Task/Task Card tab can be used to perform these steps.
3. Right-click and click Perform Structure Change. The Structure Changes - Select Action assistant step opens.
4. Select Swap Components and then click Next. The Swap Components assistant step opens.
5. The values in the Remove or Swap from area appear automatically. These values show the part/serial information of the serial structure for which the serial will be swapped.
6. In the Install or Swap into area, enter the part/serial information of the serial structure the serial will be swapped into. In the Vehicle ID field enter the ID of the vehicle part you want to swap a serial with. Click List to select a value. The value in this field must be the same as the value in the Vehicle ID field in the Remove or Swap from area, since you are swapping components within one structure.  When a value in this field is entered, the values in the Top Part No and Top Serial No appear automatically. Alternatively, you can select a value in the Top Part No field or the Top Serial No field directly. 
7. In the Structure Pos field, enter the structure change position in which the swapped serial is to be installed. Click List to select a currently installed structure position.
8. The values in the Part No/Rev and the Serial Number fields appear automatically.
9. The workshop to which the work order was distributed appears automatically in the Workshop field. If necessary, you can change to another workshop using the List of Values.
10. In the Str. Change Date field, enter the date and time the structure change is to be performed.
11. Click Finish to close the assistant and perform the structure change.

Use this procedure to perform a structure change, i.e., swap serials, to the structure of the vehicle on which the fault was reported:

1. Open the Flight Log window and populate (F2) or query (F3) for your flight log number and/or serial.
2. Click the Fault tab and select the relevant fault number from the Fault Number list.
3. Right-click and click Perform Structure Change. The Structure Changes - Select Action assistant step opens.
4. Verify that the Swap Components option is selected and then click Next. The Swap Components assistant step opens.
5. Continue with steps 3 to 12 described in the in the first procedure listed above.
